India's first-ever Lok Sabha election or general election took place between October 25, 1951 and February 21, 1952.

Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of the country after independence and Dr Rajendra Prasad was voted to be the President.

The first-ever polling was spread over four months and there were 68 polling days or phases. The first phase was held in Himachal Pradesh constituencies Chini and Pangi while the last phase, that is the 68th phase, was held in Uttar Pradesh.

This year, the general elections 2019 will have seven phases and will be conducted starting from April 11. Counting of all the phases will take place on May 23.
