Alphabet's Waymo Asked by US Traffic Safety Regulator to Provide Details of Collisions
Jun 13, 2024 4:38 AM

07:24 AM EDT, 06/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo has been asked by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to provide additional information regarding a series of incidents involving Waymo self-driving vehicles that led to crashes and potential traffic safety law violations, according to the regulator's June 11 letter.

In its letter, the NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation said it opened a preliminary evaluation after getting 22 reports of "unexpected driving behaviors" involving vehicles equipped with the Waymo 5th generation automated driving system. Among the incidents cited by the agency in its initial letter to Waymo in May were collisions with gates, chains and parked vehicles.

The agency said that while there have been no allegations of injuries, several incidents involved "collisions with clearly visible objects that a competent driver would be expected to avoid," raising concerns that ADS-equipped vehicles showing unexpected driving behaviors may increase the risk of crash, property damage and injury.

Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
