Market Chatter: Boeing, Justice Department Ask Judge to Approve Deal Despite Opposition From Crash Victims' Families
Jul 3, 2025 4:13 AM

06:50 AM EDT, 07/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing Company ( BA ) and the Justice Department have requested a US judge to approve a deal under which the plane maker can dodge litigation despite opposition from relatives of some of the victims of two 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019, Reuters reported Thursday.

The agreement will allow Boeing ( BA ) to avoid being labelled as a convicted felon and to avoid oversight from an independent monitor for three years, according to the report.

Boeing ( BA ) reportedly asked Judge Reed O'Connor to reject objections filed by the families and grant the government's motion to dismiss the charge, arguing that the executive branch solely has the power to decide whether to bring or maintain a prosecution.

The Justice Department reportedly said in a court filing that it agreed to dismiss the case for an agreement "that secures a significant fine, compliance improvements, and a substantial victim compensation fund."

Meanwhile, the families argue that dismissal is not in the public interest, and the obligations imposed on Boeing ( BA ) are not enforceable, Reuters said.

The families insist that even if the court rejects the deal, O'Connor should appoint a special prosecutor, while Boeing ( BA ) and the Justice Department both asked him to reject the appointment.

Under the deal, Boeing ( BA ) has agreed to pay an additional $444.5 million into a crash victims fund on top of a new $243.6 million fine.

Boeing ( BA ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
