Rio Tinto, Chinalco's Acquisition of Brazilian Aluminum Firm Approved by Brazil Regulator

09:54 AM EDT, 03/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Rio Tinto (RIO) and Chinalco's acquisition of Brazilian aluminum company Companhia Brasileira de Aluminio has been approved by Brazilian competition regulator CADE, according to a notice posted on a government website.

Rio Tinto said in late January that it and Chinalco agreed to buy Votorantim's 68.6% controlling stake in Companhia Brasileira de Aluminio for $902.6 million in cash.

Under the agreement, the majority interest will be acquired via a joint venture 33% of which will be held by Rio and 67% by Chinalco, Rio said at the time.
