03:13 PM EDT, 06/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Rio Tinto (RIO) on Thursday released draft environmental studies for its proposed Jadar lithium mine in Serbia, more than two years after the government pulled permits for the project in January 2022.
The company published the draft studies to encourage facts-based public dialogue on the project, instead of a politicized debate based on disinformation and fake news, according to Rio Tinto representative in Serbia, Marijanti Babic.
According to the company, the studies were conducted over six and a half years and show that the project can be safely implemented in accordance with domestic and international environmental standards.
At full capacity, Rio Tinto expects the mine to produce around 58,000 tons of lithium carbonate each year, which would be enough lithium for more than 1 million electric vehicles a year. The project would also produce boric acid and sodium sulfate.
