Sep 11, 2024 12:14 AM

04:12 AM EDT, 09/10/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with response from Stellantis ( STLA ) in the last paragraph.)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is launching an investigation of engine compartment fires in Stellantis' ( STLA ) 2021 to 2023 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles.

In total, 781,459 vehicles are impacted.

The regulator said its Office of Defects launched the investigation after receiving nine vehicle owner's questionnaire reports, a death and injury report, and field reports alleging incidents of fires.

Most of the reports describe a fire taking place while the ignition was in the off position, the regulator said.

A Stellantis ( STLA ) spokesperson said, "We're cooperating with NHTSA."
