US Senators Call for Probe Into Exclusion of GM-Backed Team Andretti-Cadillac From Formula 1
May 21, 2024 11:33 AM

02:01 PM EDT, 05/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- A group of US senators on Tuesday called for an investigation into the reasons for General Motors-backed (GM) Andretti-Cadillac Racing Team's exclusion from entering the Formula 1 championship series.

In a statement released by Senator Amy Klobuchar, chair of the subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights, the senators urged the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate why Team Andretti-Cadillac did not break into the competition.

"Despite meeting all requirements to join Formula One set forth by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, Andretti-Cadillac was refused entry into Formula One by its commercial arm, which was tasked to negotiate commercial terms of entry after approval by the FIA," according to the statement.

"This has raised substantial concerns that Formula One's members and sponsors may have colluded to exclude Andretti-Cadillac to insulate themselves from competition on the track and in the European car market."

The FTC had no comment, while the FIA, DOJ, and GM did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
