Net revenue for the quarter ended March 31 was $8.78 billion, up from $7.99 billion a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by Capital IQ expected $8.62 billion.

The company's board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.52, payable on June 3 to holders of record on May 17.

Visa shares rose nearly 3% in after-hours trading.
