Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Tuesday as Investors Await Economic Data, Trump Orders to Remove Lisa Cook

08:46 AM EDT, 08/26/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.1% lower in Tuesday's premarket activity, ahead of economic reports due later in the day, while President Donald Trump ordered late Monday to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her post.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures, and Nasdaq futures all down 0.1% before the start of regular trading.

New orders for US durable goods fell by 2.8% in July following a larger drop of 9.4%, compared with expectations for a 3.8% decrease in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:30 am ET.

Federal Reserve Richmond President Thomas Barkin also speaks at 8:30 am ET at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.

The Case-Shiller Home Price Index and the FHFA House Price Index, both for June, are due at 9 am ET.

The Conference Board consumer confidence report and the Richmond Fed manufacturing index, both for August, are slated to be released at 10 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 0.8%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) fell by 0.9%, Ether ETF (EETH) was up 0.9%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was inactive.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was flat, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was flat and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

EchoStar ( SATS ) shares were up 72% before Tuesday's opening bell, after the company said it signed a deal with AT&T ( T ) to sell a total of its 50 MHz of nationwide spectrum for about $23 billion in an all-cash transaction.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was marginally down by 0.04%.

Serina Therapeutics ( SER ) shares were up 24% in recent Tuesday premarket activity, a day after the biotechnology company said it received a written feedback from the US Food and Drug Administration that supports its trial for Parkinson's disease.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was up 0.4%, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) declined by 0.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was flat, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was 0.3% higher.

EHang Holdings ( EH ) stock was down 11% before the opening bell on Tuesday, after the urban air mobility technology platform lowered its 2025 revenue outlook.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) was up 0.1%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

Daqo New Energy ( DQ ) shares were down 4% before the Tuesday opening bell, after the polysilicon manufacturer posted lower Q2 revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was flat, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was 0.5% lower.

Energy Fuels ( UUUU ) shares were up 5.5% pre-bell Tuesday, after the critical minerals company said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Vulcan Elements to collaborate on building a domestic supply chain for rare earth magnets.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.3%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.5% higher.

HSBC ( HSBC ) stock was down less than 1% before Tuesday's bell, after the British lender was fined 4.2 million Hong Kong dollars ($538,446) by Hong Kong regulators over alleged breach of disclosure failures related to the bank's investment banking relationships with companies in research reports published between 2013 and 2021.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 1.7% at $63.72 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas gained 0.6% to $2.83 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) declined 1.6%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 0.6% higher.

Gold futures for December gained 0.2% to reach $3,425 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were down 0.5% at $38.52 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) advanced 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.2% lower.
