Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced free travel for women on all Delhi Transport Corporation buses, cluster buses and metro trains. Addressing a press briefing in the national capital, the Delhi CM said the move has been made to ensure women can have a safe travel experience and can access modes of transport which they were not able to use due to higher prices.

Women’s safety is of utmost important to the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government, he said.

The Delhi CM said that he has given a week’s time to the officials to come up with a proposal in this regard.

"I've given one-week time to officials to make a detailed proposal — for both DTC and metro — on how and when can this be implemented. We're making an effort to start this within 2-3 months. We're also seeking suggestions from people, regarding implementation," ANI quoted Kejriwal as saying.

Moreover, those women who can afford, they are free to pay for their tickets, Kejriwal said maintaining that subsidy won’t be imposed. He also announced an expansion in the installation of CCTV cameras and surveillance from June 8.

In all, 2,80,000 cameras will be installed with all schools across Delhi to come under CCTV surveillance by November.

Kejriwal had recently called a review meeting of his party MLAs and municipal councillors after the AAP's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

The AAP lost all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi to the Bharatiya Janata Party. It just managed to win a single seat in Punjab’s Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency.

Delhi will go to polls next year to elect the 70-member assembly.
