Delhi election 2020 results: AAP’s Atishi wins Kalkaji, defeats BJP's Dharambir Singh by over 9700 votes

Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Atishi has defeated her nearest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Dharambir Singh by a margin of over 9,700 votes. Contesting from the south Delhi's Kalkaji assembly constituency, Atishi, who is credited for the national capital's education reforms under the AAP government, bagged 51,662 votes, securing almost 52 percent of votes.

BJP's Singh garnered 41,892 votes with a little over 42 percent vote share. Congress candidate Shivani Chopra could garner just 4,688 votes. Interestingly, NOTA was opted by at least 518 voters, as per the data available on the Election Commission website.

Atishi replaced the AAP's incumbent MLA Avtar Singh Kalkaji who had won the seat in the 2015 Delhi assembly polls by defeating BJP's Harmeet Singh Kalka by a margin of almost 20,000 votes.

BJP's Harmeet Singh had defeated Dharambir Singh (at that time with AAP) in the 2008 assembly polls by a margin of over 2,000 votes.

In 2008, the seat was won by Congress candidate Subhash Chopra who defeated BJP's Jai Gopal Abrol by a margin of more than 13,000 votes.

Kalkaji falls in South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency and BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri has been winning the seat from last few general elections.

Earlier this year, Atishi unsuccessfully contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP's Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday appeared to be heading back to power for a second term in Delhi with the party leading in 63 seats of the 70 and the BJP ahead in just 7 seats. The contest for political power over the national capital was a bipolar one with the Congress nowhere in the reckoning.
