In the 2016 Assembly elections, Kalapet was won by M.O.H.F. Shahjahan of INC.

Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by P.M.L. Kalyana Sundaram of AINRC.

In the 2016 assembly polls, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan garnered 9839 votes, securing over 35.09 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 634 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 2.26 percent.

The constituency polled 28068 votes in the 2016 Puducherry assembly polls with a voter turnout of 87.69 percent.

The Kalapet constituency has a literacy level of 85.44 percent.
