Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party handed a heavy defeat to the Congress and regional parties and Congress president Rahul Gandhi could not save his own seat in the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, eight former chief ministers belonging to the Congress party tasted electoral defeat. Here is the list of 8 former CMs who fought and lost the Lok Sabha Polls 2019.

Sheila Dikshit —

Congress heavyweight and former chief minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit lost to Manoj Tiwari in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Dikshit did not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. From 1984 to 1989, she was the Congress MP from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh. She served as the Union minister of parliamentary affairs, and then as a minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office from 1986 to 1989. She was Delhi’s chief minister from 1998 to 2013.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda — Former Haryana Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda lost to BJP's Ramesh Chander Kaushik from the Sonipat Lok Sabha seat by a margin of nearly 15,000 votes, as per Election Commission data. Hooda, who had been two-time chief minister from 2005-2014, was at present a sitting MLA of the Congress from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi in Rohtak district. He contested the Lok Sabha polls after a gap of 14 years.

Harish Rawat — Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat is defeated in Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar by BJP's Ajay Bhatt. A five-time Member of Parliament, Rawat is a leader of the Indian National Congress party.

Ashok Chavan — Former Maharashtra chief minister and Congress candidate Ashok Chavan lost in Nanded Lok Sabha seat to Pratap Chikhlikar of BJP by more than 50,000 votes. He has served as the chief minister of Maharashtra from December 2008 to November 2010. He was earlier the minister for cultural affairs, industries, mines and protocol in the Vilasrao Deshmukh government.

Sushil Kumar Shinde — Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde lost to BJP's Jai Sidheshwar Shivacharya Mahaswamiji in Solapur. He was also the minister of home affairs and power in the Manmohan Singh government, and the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha until 26 May 2014.

Veerappa Moily — Former Karnataka chief minister Veerappa Moily was defeated by BJP's BN Bache Gowda in Chikkballapur parliamentary constituency by 5,63,802 votes. He was the minister of state for small scale industries and held the position from 1974-77. In 1992, he became the chief minister of Karnataka.

Mukul Sangma — The former chief minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma lost to Agatha Sangma of National People's Party in Tura parliamentary constituency by a margin of 63,775 votes.

Digvijay Singh — Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh lost to BJP's Pragya Singh Thakur in Bhopal. Pragya won by a margin of more than 3 lakh votes.

Another former Congress chief minister, Nabam Tuki is trailing behind Union minister Kiren Rijiju in Arunachal West Parliamentary constituency.
