Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 24 made his maiden visit to Egypt to discuss ways to improve trade, investments and energy ties. A meeting was held with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Egypt and discussed ways to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries. President El-Sisi confers PM Modi with Egypt's highest state honour 'Order of the Nile' award.

Modi arrived Egypt on June 24 afternoon after a successful visit to the US. Same day he met the Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly-led India Unit, a group of high-level ministers constituted by El-Sisi to improve the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Further, he discussed Egypt-India ties as well as issues related to promoting social harmony and countering extremism and radicalisation with the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Shawky Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam. "I was honoured to meet the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Shawky Ibrahim Allam. We had rich discussions on the relations between India and Egypt, especially the cultural and people-to-people ties," Prime Minister Modi tweeted after his meeting.

Modi also met the members of the Indian diaspora and the Bohra community. Post which, he visited Cairo's historic Al-Hakim Mosque, restored with the help of India's Dawoodi Bohra community.

Modi is visiting Egypt at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Egypt in the past two decades. "I am confident this visit will strengthen India's ties with Egypt. I look forward to talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and attending other programmes," Prime Minister Modi tweeted after landing in Cairo.
