Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh registered victory on Shimla (Rural) seat defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Ravi Kumar Mehta. As per the latest data by Election Commission of India, Vikramaditya Singh has maintained a lead by 13,860 votes.

Congress, this year fielded Vikramaditya Singh, son of former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh, as its candidate from Shimla (Rural) seat against BJP's Ravi Kumar Mehta. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded Prem Kumar as its candidate for the seat.

Shimla (Rural) is an assembly constituency in the Shimla district in the Upper Himachal region of Himachal Pradesh.

The Shimla (Rural) legislative assembly constituency went to the polls on November 12, 2022. The assembly seat is reserved for the Scheduled Caste category and falls in the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency.

Congress has been winning since 2012 and is eyeing a third term in the constituency, which is considered the party's stronghold. Congress has fielded late CM Virbhadra Singh's son Vikramaditya Singh here. He will go head-to-head against BJP candidate Ravi Kumar Mehta and AAP's Prem Kumar.

In the December 2017 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Vikramaditya Singh of Congress won Shimla (Rural). Vikramaditya Singh defeated BJP leader Dr Pramod Sharma.

Projected as one of Congress’ important candidates in this election, Vikramaditya Singh entered active politics in 2013 and went on to become the state youth Congress president. He had campaigned aggressively in the Mandi bypoll and ensured the victory of his mother and Congress state president Pratibha Singh.

In the 2012 Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha elections, the seat was held by Congress' Virbhadra Singh.
