The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday, November 13, appointed Mahua Moitra, the incumbent MP from Krishnanagar, as the District President of Krishnanagar organisational district. The decision has sparked speculation about her potential candidacy in the 2024 General Elections. Moitra, known for taking on powerful figures, was earlier facing recommendations for expulsion from Lok Sabha following allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Speaking to CNBC TV18, senior journalist Neerja Chowdhury suggested that TMC's decision to appoint Moitra signals a revision in their earlier stance, possibly in response to the ethics committee verdict. Moitra, known for her outspoken nature against powerful entities, has found support from the party, contrary to initial perceptions.
Chowdhury noted that parties typically stand by their leaders in challenging situations, which TMC had not initially done. The move to appoint Moitra as the district president is seen as a potential indicator that she may receive a TMC ticket for the 2024 elections.
Speculation about a rift between Moitra and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has been circulating, Chowdhury said that BJP's campaign against Moitra may have provided a collateral benefit of her being repeated as a TMC candidate for Lok Sabha.
Last month, Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai lodged a complaint with the CBI against Moitra, accusing her of corruption and money laundering. The allegations involved receiving favors from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for parliamentary questions targeting industrialist Gautam Adani.
Following a probe, the Parliament's ethics committee recommended Moitra's dismissal from the Lok Sabha for accepting favors and unauthorized sharing of log-in details. Despite initial denials, Moitra later acknowledged sharing her Parliament log-in details and receiving accessories as gifts, maintaining that they were received as a friend.
