09:45 AM EDT, 08/28/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Verizon Communications ( VZ ) will launch a commercial direct-to-device messaging service for its customers in partnership with satellite service provider Skylo, the companies said Wednesday.

They said that beginning this fall, emergency messaging and location sharing will be accessible to customers on certain smartphones even when a terrestrial cellular network is unavailable.

The companies said that next year, Verizon customers with select devices will be offered the ability to text anywhere via satellite.
